Quicken Simplifi is an all-in-one budgeting app that allows you to track spending, create spending plans, view transactions and reports, and even monitor your investments.

Like other budgeting apps, Quicken Simplifi has gained popularity since Mint announced it was shutting down. Simplifi is also a paid app, which is not uncommon, but there are several free budgeting apps to download.

Why would you pay for Simplifi when you can use other budgeting apps for free? The truth is that sometimes you get what you pay for.

In this Quicken Simplifi review, we’ll take a closer look at how we use the Simplfi budgeting app, its features, benefits, drawbacks, and costs to help you decide if it’s right for you.

What is Quicken Simplifi?

Simplifi is a budgeting app launched in 2020 by software company Quicken. The app was originally called Simplifi by Quicken but was rebranded in 2023 as Quicken Simplifi. The personal finance app helps individuals view and manage their money through tools like goal setting and expense tracking. The New York Times Wirecutter recently named Simplifi the best budgeting app.

The budgeting app features an easy-to-use interface, making it easy for almost anyone to navigate. Simplifi is not free, like some apps, but it comes with robust features well worth the monthly fee when used effectively.

Quicken Simplifi has the ability to connect to over 14,000 financial institutions, making it easy to link almost any financial account you have. Account options supported by Quicken Simplifi include but are not limited to:

  • Checking accounts
  • Savings accounts
  • Money market accounts
  • CDs
  • Credit cards
  • Lines of credit
  • Other credit accounts
  • Brokerage accounts
  • Retirement accounts
  • College savings accounts
  • Assets like real estate and vehicles
  • Mortgage loans
  • Other home loans
  • Auto loans
  • Personal loans
  • Student loans
  • Small business loans
  • Other loans

Simplifi pulls data from linked accounts to provide high-level views of your finances. It’s one of the most comprehensive personal finance apps available. If you previously used the Mint app, Simplifi allows you to import transactions from your Mint account using a CVS file.

Quicken Simplifi Features

Quicken Simplifi Dashboard

The Simplifi Dashboard gives you a clear overview of your accounts and balances, savings goals, watchlists, spending plan, bills and payments, income, investments, credit score and other financial details.

Transactions

The transaction tab offers a more detailed look at every transaction that occurs with your linked accounts. It lists the account, date, status, payee, category, amount, and any tags you want to add.

Spending Plan

Simplifi’s Spending Planner is a game-changer. It lays out your expenses versus income so you see your spendable cash at a glance. It’s split into four categories:

  • Income after bills and saving
  • Planned spending
  • Other spending
  • Available

It’s a budget-keeper’s dream, ensuring you stay on track with expenses like groceries, so there’s more for savings goals like family vacations.

Bills and Payments

Quicken Simplifi offers several ways to view your bills and other payments, but the Bills & Payments tab offers the most comprehensive breakdown. You can view a general overview of payments, cash flow and recurring payments. There’s also a calendar that shows upcoming bill payments.

Watchlists

Watchlists allow you to monitor specific spending trends. You can choose to track spending by category, payee or specific tags you create. There’s no limit on how many watchlists you can create, giving you full control over expense tracking.

Reports

The Reports feature makes it so simple to see an overview of your finances. Report options include:

  • Spending
  • Income
  • Net Income
  • Savings
  • Net Worth
  • Monthly Summary
  • Refund Tracker
  • Credit Score

Each report offers different filters for an even closer look at specific details. We love setting custom date ranges for more long-term views of our progress.

Savings Goals

Simplifi’s Savings Goals is one of our favorite features. The app lets you set and track savings for vacations, emergencies, or anything else. Simplifi users can set a specific amount to contribute each month or assign an end goal date, and the app will calculate when they’ll achieve their goal. It shows their progress and offers tips on speeding up their savings journey. It even provides insights if their income or expenses change.

Investments

Add your investment and retirement accounts to monitor your portfolio’s performance closely with the Investments feature. While it focuses on the bigger picture rather than individual transactions, you’ll see key details about your portfolio’s performance.

Real-Time Alerts

Quicken Simplifi keeps you informed through real-time notifications. Within your account settings, you can enable (or disable) email and push notifications for various events or activities. Some of the alerts you can receive include:

  • Bill payment
  • Credit score alerts
  • Monthly credit report
  • Goal contribution reminders
  • High credit card balance
  • Income received
  • Low bank account balance
  • Spending updates
  • Upcoming bills

Having so many options can help you stay on track, but it can also become a pain. As someone with ADHD, it’s a blessing and curse to receive real-time reminders. I want to stay informed, but it can also be a distraction when I’m working. I have most notifications turned off right now, but I can also use my phone settings to block notifications during certain parts of the day.

Quicken Simplifi Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Simple interface
  • Allows you to track a wide range of financial accounts in one app
  • Ad-free experience
  • Customizable features to fit varying needs
  • Works with different budgeting styles

Cons

  • No free version or free trial
  • The fee is charged annually, not monthly

Cost

Quicken Simplifi currently costs $2.99 per month and is billed annually at $35.88, which is 50% of normal pricing. The app frequently offers deals like this, which can save you considerable money and make paying for budgeting app easier to swallow.

Unfortunately, Quicken Simplifi does not offer a free trial period to test drive the app before buying. The app has a 30-day guarantee if you’re unsatisfied with the app, but we’re not sure how hard it is to request or qualify for a refund. We don’t love it when budgeting apps bill fees annually, especially without a way to try it out beforehand.

Security

Security is always a concern when dealing with personal or financial information. Simplifi uses advanced encryption technology to keep your information safe.

Like other budgeting apps, Quicken Simplifi partners with a data aggregator to link and sync your financial accounts and information. Simplifi asks you to provide login information for your accounts, and the aggregation partner creates a one-way connection to retrieve account information nightly. That means they can pull information like deposits, withdrawals and other transactions but can’t perform any transactions.

As mentioned above, Quicken Simplifi allows you to add transactions manually if you’re not comfortable sharing your information. Unfortunately, some of the app’s features won’t work if you choose the manual option. If that’s what you want to do, using a budgeting app, atleast an all-in-one solution with real-time tracking, may not be a good fit, honestly.

Customer Support

Simplifi offers several ways to get help or if you have questions about the app. Both the web app and mobile app feature a Help Center. Within the Help Center, you can search for answers to specific questions, send a secure message or chat with a support specialist.

You can also get support over the phone. Both chat and phone support are only available during business hours (5 am-5 pm PST, 7 days a week).

The Quicken Simplifi Community is a user-driven support forum accessible 24/7 that may answer questions from actual app users.

Getting Started with Quicken Simplifi

Comment on user experience, interface, and support options.

Despite a robust set of features, Quicken Simplifi is relatively easy to use. After you set up an account, you can connect your financial accounts. The most effective way is to link your accounts so information updates automatically. If you’re not comfortable doing that, there’s an option to add accounts manually.

We started by adding a couple of accounts first until we were more familiar with how the app worked. Once you’ve added your desired accounts, Simplifi asks questions about your income and bills. You’ll see a list of transactions and can mark if they are recurring bills.

Simplifi uses the information you provide to create a monthly spending plan and projected cash flow. What’s nice is that you can edit your recurring transactions any time in case you forget something.

From the dashboard, you can access all of the various features available for users.

Quicken Simplifi is not perfect, just like any budgeting app. We connect a few accounts, learn how the app works, determine what we like and what we don’t, and use the tools and features that are most beneficial and that we’re likely to continue using long-term.

There’s no rule, even with a paid app like Quicken Simplifi, that you have to utilize every feature to get your money’s worth. If using Simplifi helps you cut out unnecessary spending each month, it’s probably worth much more than the cost.
